GARDEN OF PHYSICS: The benefits of Chernobyl

GARDEN OF PHYSICS: Episode 13
The benefits of Chernobyl
Guest: dr Vladimir Udovičić

The construction of nuclear power plants is prohibited by law in the Republic of Serbia, but our country is surrounded by numerous reactors in the neighbourhood. ’Nuclear energy has had declines initiated by various accidents. When we take into account a longer time frame, they are few and far between, but being so intense they create radiophobia’, says Dr Vladimir Udovičić of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the thirteenth episode of popular science video-series ’The Garden of Physics’.

One such event took place on 26 April 1986, when an accident happened at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Due to radioactive contamination, the neighbouring city of Pripyat was evacuated and an exclusion zone was declared. The second nuclear catastrophe that the world remembers occurred in Japan in 2011. After an earthquake, the country was hit by a devastating tsunami bringing about a series of accidents on the reactors of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

These events, according to Dr Udovičić, animated nuclear researchers to pinpoint the weaknesses of this technology. ’More attention has been focused on safety aspects, in order to produce safer reactors’, states Dr Udovićić explaining the advantages of nuclear energy application since it does not affect climate change, what the future of this field is as well as what nuclear safety measures have been implemented in Serbia.

Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science, whether it is the greatest secrets of our times or research indicating unexpected horizons in the perception of the world. New episodes are aired every Friday online and they are available on webpages of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and the portal „Science Through Stories“, as well as on You are welcome to join us.
