‘Clouds form where there is a condensation of water vapour. Sometimes not only water droplets are present in the clouds but also water crystals, with various particles being contained in them’, explains Luka Ilić of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the seventeenth episode of the popular science video series ‘The Garden of Physics’ which discusses how it rains, as well as the way meteorologists, make weather forecasts.

In Ilić’s words, nowadays meteorology primarily relies on numerical models, i.e. equation systems describing the atmosphere. ’Based on the measurements, we determine the current state of the atmosphere and by the application of these numerical models, we calculate the future weather forecast’, elaborates Ilić.

The Institute of Physics, Belgrade owns its meteorological station where LIDAR device is located. ’In a sense, it is similar to a radar. LIDAR emits laser radiation dispersing on particles in the atmosphere’, says Ilić and further explains that this device does not provide information on its location but is used to remotely detect and collect information on the vertical profile of the atmosphere.
