How to predict pollution

The atmosphere is difficult to simulate and create the conditions which are integral to this complex system’, says Dr Mirjana Perišić of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the 25th episode of the popular science video series ‘The Garden of Physics’, in which she explains how pollution can be predicted.
Two decades ago, pioneer research of the chemical composition of aerosol started at the Environmental Physics Laboratory to determine which particles have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment. ‘Air quality research starts at the basic level which includes measuring the concentration of pollutants’, elaborates Dr Perišić, noting that meteorological variables such as temperature and pressure are also measured in these situations.
Dr Mirjana Perišić is one of the researchers of the Institute of Physics who participates in the ATLAS project. Dr Perišić states that the idea of this project is to make use of the existing database on the pollution that was collected across the world in the last decade as well as advanced analytical methods to obtain information ‘that will help us in the global and fundamental understanding of the air pollution problem’.
The series ‘The Garden of Physics’ was launched by the Institue of Physics, Belgrade inspired by the concept of popular IPB forums which, before the pandemic broke out, had brought together a large audience at the big hall of the Students’ Cultural Centre. Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science. Instead of being in front of an audience, we now talk with physicists and other researchers in the Garden of the Institute, on the banks of the Danube in Zemun.
