‘Mechanism of the God Particle’

’Beauty represents a guiding research principle, especially in high energy physics’, says Dr Antun Balaž of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the fifth episode of the scientific popular video series ’Garden of Physics’, explaining how symmetry has directed research from the middle of the 20th century and led to the discovery of the Higgs boson.
The existence of the so-called God Particle was confirmed in 2013 in the ATLAS and CMS experiments on an accelerator in CERN and this moment represents one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of the 21st century. ‘This way, it was corroborated that the Standard Model, as it was conceived on symmetry and beauty, corresponds to what we have in nature’, explains Dr Balaž.
In the fifth episode of the series, Dr Balaž elaborates on what the so-called Higgs mechanism is and how it is linked to symmetry breaking. ‘The things in nature are usually as simple as possible. The Higgs field is the simplest example of the theory which can explain the existence of boson mass’, concludes Dr Balaž.
