GARDEN OF PHYSICS: Episode 15
When will computers become quantum?
Guest: dr Dušan Vudragović

‘The main difference between quantum and classical computers is that the classical computers use classical logic to calculate something, i.e. they see information as bits, while the quantum ones tend to use quantum physics effects to calculate a certain set of problems,’ says Dr Dušan Vudragović of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the fifteenth volume of the popular science video series ‘The Garden of Physics’.

In the years when quantum mechanics made its way, it seemed difficult to find its application in everyday life. However, in the 1980s, American physicist Paul Benioff started to claim that it was possible to build computers which do not follow the non-intuitive laws of mechanics.

According to Dr Vudragović’s words, the first application of quantum computers lies in the research of quantum systems. ‘However, if we record all that force of a quantum computer, i.e. the amount of information possible to be stored, we conclude that it could lead to a new industrial revolution,’ says Dr Vudragović.

Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science, whether it is the greatest secrets of our times or research indicating unexpected horizons in the perception of the world. New episodes are aired every Friday online and they are available on webpages of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and the portal „Science Through Stories“, as well as on You are welcome to join us.
