GARDEN OF PHYSICS Episode 21
Intelligence without people
Guets: dr Antun Balaž

’Without scientists, it will never be possible to have science’, says Dr Antun Balaž of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the twenty-first episode of the popular science video series ’The Garden of Physics’.

The history of computers is connected to great scientific research. First computers, and further down the road, the Internet, were developed in major scientific centres (such as CERN) for the purpose of helping research efforts. If today’s development of artificial intelligence continues, will smart machines once and for all replace scientists?

If computers become capable of developing true intelligence, they will become scientists’, states Dr Balaž, who while responding to this question, gives a detailed review of a research process, what scientists do and how they operate, as well as why true intelligence is completely irreplaceable for certain issues. ’I hope that in the future, artificial intelligence will be able to restrain itself from endangering others. After all, it is a way of demonstrating that a being is intelligent’, thinks Dr Balaž.

Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science, whether it is the greatest secrets of our times or research indicating unexpected horizons in the perception of the world. New episodes are aired every Friday online and they are available on webpages of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and the portal „Science Through Stories“, as well as on You are welcome to join us.
