GARDEN OF PHYSICS: Episode 11 The hidden world of the multitude Guest: dr Dimitrije Stepanenko

’For most materials, the scale of 100 nanometres is the place where the quantum mechanics dies’, says Dr Dimitrije Stepanenko of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the eleventh episode of the popular science video series ’The Garden of Physics’, explaining how worlds and their pertinent rules change with the size scales.

As the dimensions of a world grow smaller, we discover new objects and phenomena.’If we begin with the macroscopic scale and go further down the scale, one possibility is that there exists an abrupt transition from the macroscopic described by classical physics to the microscopic described by the theory of elementary particles and that there are no intermediate structures. However, there exist levels of the organization of the matter with their rules’, says Dr Stepanenko. Between macro and micro world there is a nanoworld governed by completely different rules, where our intuitions acquired in the study of environment or quantum mechanics cease to be valid. It is to these differences among differently sized worlds that this episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated.

Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science, whether it is the greatest secrets of our times or research indicating unexpected horizons in the perception of the world. New episodes are aired every Friday online and they are available on webpages of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and the portal „Science Through Stories“, as well as on You are welcome to join us.
