GARDEN OF PHYSICS: Episode 08 Can physics change Serbia? Guest: dr Aleksandar Bogojević

’We live in the universe brimming in treasures, but we are finite and cannot comprehend that infinite abundance of beauty. However, if we grasp one, two or three sites of the beautiful, we become more valuable beings’, says Dr Aleksandar Bogojević, director of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the eighth volume of the scientific-popular video series ’The Garden of Physics’.

’What is the natural site where we can evaluate what we are, what we should be, and where we could be, having in mind that there are not a billion and a half of us and that we are not the richest’, Dr Bogojevic asks in a conversation dedicated to the question ’Can physics change Serbia?’

Physics arrived at Serbia rather late. Although at the turn of the 20th century it still had not been developed, Mihajlo Pupin, Nikola Tesla followed by Milutin Milanković fundamentally contributed to world science. Its accelerated institutional development in our country began as late as after the Second World War, and with investments in nuclear research initiated by Pavle Savić, physics rapidly became one of the leading disciplines.

One of the ’fathers’ of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and a pioneer of quantum mechanics in Serbia Zvonko Marić and other researchers opened up a horizon of a whole variety of research.

’I am convinced that several opportunities are lurking in sciences and engineering disciplines related to fundamental sciences, where we are to find one or two things in which we could be globally competitive’, believes Dr Bogojević.

Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science, whether it is the greatest secrets of our times or research indicating unexpected horizons in the perception of the world. New episodes are aired every Friday online and they are available on webpages of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and the portal „Science Through Stories“, as well as on You are welcome to join us.
