The focus of the research conducted within this project is the issue of how physicists can assist electrical engineers and ecologists in their effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in electricity transmission systems. One of the steps being considered in the project is the elimination of Sulphur hexafluoride gas. The project team will consider possibilities regarding the use of alternative substances in electricity transmission systems. Physicists face a wide range of issues concerning these new gases which they will try to tackle. Some of these issues are: when these gases are under the influence of an electric field how they become conducting, how electrons and molecules of these gases interact and which are the basic properties of breakthrough phase and streamer discharge in these gases.
