SPIG International symposium realized

19. April 2022.

The 30th Summer School and International Symposium on the Physics of Ionized Gases (SPIG) were organized in virtual format from 24 – 28 August 2020 instead of it being located in Šabac, as it was initially planned.

One of the organizers of the scientific symposium which is held biennially is the Institute of Physics Belgrade, along with the organizers the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade and the Faculty of Mathematics in Belgrade.

SPIG traditionally brings together physicists (both engaged in experimental or theoretical physics) and astronomers to discuss current research status of the physics of ionized gasses. According to Dr Vladimir Srećković of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade, one of the organizers, some of the topics that were discussed were: interaction of electrons and photons with atoms and complex molecular systems, heavy particle collisions, swarms and transport phenomena, the interaction of lasers and plasma with surfaces, plasma spectroscopy and other diagnostic methods, plasma applications and devices, fusion plasmas, astrophysical plasmas and collective phenomena.

This year a special session entitled Atomic Collisions in Plasmas was held in honour of the recently departed Academician Ratko Janev.

The symposium gathered together 156 participants, including 63 invited speakers from a great number of countries, with the majority being from European countries and Japan.
