GIZ donation to the Institute

13. October 2023.

As part of the Global Program “Migration and Diaspora” which promotes the potential of global migration for sustainable development, the German Organization for International Cooperation (GIZ) donated valuable equipment to the Institute of Physics Belgrade. This donation’s intended purpose is for the research of the experts who have returned to the country to continue their careers.

Dr. Sonja Predin , researcher at the Scientific Computing Laboratory, received the donation. Dr. Predin is one of many researchers who used to work abroad, then returned to Serbia and continued their research at the Institute of Physics Belgrade.

Namely, after completing her theoretical physics studies at the University of Belgrade, Dr. Predin enrolled in doctoral studies in Germany at the University of Regensburg, where she received her doctorate in 2017 with the thesis “Quantum entanglement spectrum in graphene systems”.

She then continued working in the field of applied research as a research associate in cooperation with industrial partners at the Institute for Information Systems in Hof. In the fall of 2021, Dr. Predin returned to Serbia and continued her research at the Institute of Physics Belgrade, where she researches superconductivity, the quantum Hall effect, the application of machine learning techniques and data analysis in understanding complex physical phenomena.

The equipment that GIZ donated to Dr. Predin – the UPS power supply system for the PARADOX cluster – will ensure the power supply autonomy of the supercomputer at the Institute. All users of PARADOX will benefit from the donation.
