Dr Miloras Popović (1947-2026)

Dr Milorad Popović, long-standing friend of the Institute of Physics Belgrade and a physicist with a career in the USA, passed away at the age of 79, on 24 February 2026.

He was born in Belgrade, but his passion for physics took him to the United States of America, where he obtained his doctoral degree and spent his entire professional career. He worked for more than 20 years at Fermilab, the American national laboratory for high-energy physics, where he pursued challenging problems and mentored numerous young colleagues.

During his career, Dr Popović maintained close ties with researchers from Serbia and had a good cooperation with some of them from the Institute of Physics Belgrade. His cooperation with the Low-Frequency Laboratory for Nuclear Physics is of particular importance. It was through his efforts that the researchers from this laboratory joined the International Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration.

Dr Popović is survived by his wife, Ljiljana, daughter Lena, and son Branko.The funeral will take place on Saturday, February 28, at the Nova Gračanica Monastery Cemetery in Chicago.
