The day of the Institute of Physics Belgrade was marked on Friday, 16 May. A ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the Institute was held to mark the 64th anniversary of its foundation. The celebration continued with a cocktail reception for employees, researchers, and guests, held in the Institute’s garden by the banks of the Danube.
Established in 1961, the Institute of Physics emerged as the result of the intensive development of physics in post-war Yugoslavia, and it became one of the foremost scientific institutions in Serbia. Being an institute conducting research in the fields of physics and related sciences, it was the first to become a national institute.

This year’s anniversary celebration, in keeping with tradition, featured the presentation of the Institute’s Annual and Student Prizes. The Annual Prize was bestowed upon Dr Jelena Pešić, while Dr Ivan Traparić received the Student Prize. The Annual Prize is awarded to scientific papers which significantly contribute to a particular field of physics being developed at the Institute while the Student Prize is awarded to the best doctoral dissertation completed at this institution and defended in the previous year.

Together with friends, associates and other guests, the Institute’s employees celebrated the anniversary in good mood, discussing ongoing projects, research and plans. Welcoming the attendees, the Institute’s director, Dr Aleksandar Bogojević, reflected on the achievements of the previous year. ‘The sun is always shining above the Institute,’ he concluded poetically.
