Dr Borivoje Dakić Honored with the Marko Jarić Prize

14. March 2025.

The Prof. Dr Marko V. Jarić Foundation has awarded the prestigious Marko Jarić Prize for 2024 to Dr Borivoje Dakić, an associate professor at the University of Vienna in Austria. The traditional awarding ceremony will be held on Monday, 17 March 2024, at noon, at the Grand Hall of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (35 Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade).

Often referred to by the media as the ‘Serbian Nobel Prize for Physics,’ the Marko Jarić Prize has been awarded for over 25 years in recognition of outstanding scientific results in physics. The prize is financially supported by the Institute of Physics Belgrade, which organizes the award ceremony. This recognition was bestowed upon the most renowned researchers, many of whom, like Marko Jarić, have Serbian origins and hold positions at leading universities worldwide.

As the Jury’s statement explains, this year the prize went to Dr Borivoje Dakić, an associate professor at the University of Vienna in Austria, ‘for groundbreaking contributions to the development of theoretical approaches for quantifying and measuring total quantum correlations, as well as for introducing innovative methods to quantum tomography of complex multi-qubit systems, advancing the fields of quantum information and technology.’

The Prize Jury, chaired by President Professor Dr Miroljub Dugić from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, University of Kragujevac, and comprising members Dr Goran Isić, principal research fellow at the Institute of Physics Belgrade, Dr Srđan Samurović, principal research fellow at the Belgrade Astronomical Observatory, Professor Dr Igor Savić, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, University of Novi Sad, and Professor Dr Maja Burić, Faculty of Physics, University of Belgrade, reached the decision unanimously.

Born in Šabac in 1980, where he completed grammar school, Borivoje Dakić graduated in 2004 from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Belgrade, where he obtained his master’s degree three years later. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Vienna in 2011, under the supervision of Časlav Brukner. As a researcher, he has held positions at Harvard University, Oxford University and the National University of Singapore, and he has recently become a lecturer at the universities of Gdańsk and Belgrade. Since 2018, he has been based at the Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna, where he leads a research group focused on quantum entanglement, quantum measurement theory, and its applications, particularly in multiphotonic systems. He has authored around 60 scientific publications, some printed in prestigious journals such as Nature and Physical Review Letters. Professor Dakić’s papers have been cited around 3042 times, with an H-index of 19 on Scopus Preview, whereas Google Scholar recorded 4490 citations and an H-index of 22.

The Professor Dr Marko Jarić Foundation was established in 1998 with the goal of preserving the memory of the life and work of Marko Jarić (1952-1997). Its main activity is the awarding of the eponymous prize, which is bestowed upon an individual or a group of scientists for outstanding scientific results in physics.

During the ceremony, which takes place on Monday, 17 March. at noon at the SASA Grand Hall, coinciding with Marko Jarić’s birthday, distinguished guests and attendees will be addressed by Dr Aleksandar Belić, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors; Professor Dr Petar Adžić, Managing Director of the Foundation; Dr Aleksandar Bogojević, Director of the Institute of Physics; Professor Dr Miroljub Dugić, President of this year’s Prize Jury; and a representative of SASA. Following the speeches, the award will be formally presented to the recipient, who will traditionally give a popular science lecture and offer insight into his research to the public.
