The Dawn of Physics in Serbia

Although nowadays it is one of the most prolific disciplines, with notable research institutions and world giants such as Mihajlo Pupin and Nikola Tesla, physics in Serbia started developing only after the Second World War.
Starting with Galileo Galilei and his experiments with an inclined plane in the 17th century, modern physics emerged in Europe as the first truly exact science. However, such development of modern physics almost completely skipped Serbia.
At the very beginning of the 19th century, in Austria-Hungary, Atanasije Stojkovic, a writer, physicist, and astronomer of Serbian origin, wrote the work ‘Fisika’ [Physics] in Slavonic-Serbian which did not have a lasting effect due to the language it was written in. This discipline was to be studied much later since the first physics textbook was printed in 1851, and it was written by a physician.
On the initial development of physics and why this discipline developed so late, and on becoming one of the most cutting-edge disciplines, Slobodan Bubnjević spoke in the 28th episode of the Garden of Physics.
