GARDEN OF PHYSICS Episode 20
Quantum heroes
Guest: dr Andrej Bunjac

‘We are frequently fond of choosing our tribe saying that either art or science is more important, but they cannot live without each other’, says Dr Andrej Bunjac of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade in the twentieth episode of the popular science video series ‘The Garden of Physics’.

The episode titled ‘Quantum heroes’ reveals numerous intertwinements of science and arts, particularly of fantasy and physics. ‘It seems that physics holds a special place among all sciences which have entered the fiction domain’, says Dr Bunjac. He adds that quantum mechanics has proved itself useful on many occasions to creators in the field of comics and films with superheroes. On the other hand, there have been situations in history when classical literature affected science.

‘To me, maybe the most beautiful example of the interaction of science and art is the impact of literature on Murray Gell-Mann, who in 1964 introduced a new elementary particle now known as a quark’, says Dr Bunjac, explaining that the name of this particle originates from the novel ‘Finnegans Wake’ by James Joyce.

Realized in cooperation with the portal ’Science Through Stories’, each episode of ’The Garden of Physics’ is dedicated to one of the fundamental topics of modern science, whether it is the greatest secrets of our times or research indicating unexpected horizons in the perception of the world. New episodes are aired every Friday online and they are available on webpages of the Institute of Physics, Belgrade and the portal „Science Through Stories“, as well as on You are welcome to join us.
