Biology Students at the Institute

06. December 2024.

As part of the Month of Astrobiology initiative, the student section Microcosmos organized a visit to the Institute of Physics Belgrade on Thursday, 6 December.

A group of students, members of the section, toured the new Laboratory for Experimental Astrobiology at the Institute, where they got an opportunity to hear ideas and learn about the projects and goals of the researchers employed here.

Following the tour, the students attended the lecture titled ‘Extremophiles – An Expanded Framework of Life Picture ’in the Dr Dragan Popović Library reading room which was delivered by Iva Rosić and Marina Anteljević, PhD students specializing in Biology of Microorganisms from the Laboratory for Experimental Astrobiology.

During the first lecture titled ‘Astrobiological Targets’, Iva Rosić discussed characteristics and conditions ruling Venus, Mars and Titan, as well as possibilities of forming and survival of microbial forms of life in various layers and structures of these celestial bodies.

Students learned about concrete extremophile organisms representing potential life models on Venus, Mars and Titan in Marina Anteljević lecture titled ‘Microorganisms of Extreme Habitats: Candidates for Life beyond Earth.’

The visit of the students, members of the Microcosmos Section, marks the first gathering of biologists at the Institute. Previously, the students visited the Kalemegdan Planetarium within the initiative ‘A Month of Astrobiologists’ where they found out more about the Solar System and the most significant constellations of the night sky.
