Cavity optomechanics with optically levitated nanoparticles: toward quantum experiments at room temperature

will be given by Uroš Delić (Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna, Austria).

Abstract of the talk:

Optically levitated silica nanosphere is a new optomechanical system that promises exceptional quality factors (Q>10^8) when operated in ultra-high vacuum conditions. As the nanosphere center-of-mass motion is well isolated from the thermal environment, this leads to low decoherence rates and is thus a good candidate for quantum optomechanics experiments at room temperature.

As a first step toward quantum state preparation of nanosphere motion, cavity sideband cooling technique has already been demonstrated several years ago [1]. However, although many groups showed significant progress in recent years, ground state cooling is yet to be achieved. In our most recent work [2], we have showed new cavity cooling method for levitated nanospheres, which we used to demonstrate genuine three-dimensional cavity cooling. Ground state cooling is now clearly within reach in our current setup. In this talk we will present our most recent results and discuss prospective quantum experiments once the motional ground state is achieved.
