You may have been unaware, but it is now possible to become an astrobiologist at the University of Belgrade, a researcher exploring life beyond Earth. Interested students may learn more on 27 October, when the Laboratory for Experimental Astrobiology at the Institute of Physics Belgrade holds its Open Door.
As part of the master’s studies at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, a new module titled Astrobiology has been launched. Its research and educational activities will be based at the Institute of Physics Belgrade, where recently the Laboratory for Experimental Biology has been established. The module is organised by the Department of Microbiology, the Faculty of Biology.
Astrobiology is an engaging new discipline which deals with the origin of life, its evolution and presence in the Universe. As a multidisciplinary field, astrobiology is a combination of physics, biology, chemistry and geology. Its popularity has grown in the last two decades due to tremendous breakthroughs.
If you could not set your mind on a single scientific discipline for your master’s studies, astrobiology offers the opportunity to engage with several of them, aiming to address and research the most consequential scientific issues, such as life in space.
The programme of the module encompasses courses taught by leading professors from several faculties, focusing on topics such as Extrasolar Planet Systems and their Habitable Zones, the History of Earth and Mass Extinctions, Philosophical Foundation of Astrobiology, Habitability of the Universe and Biosignatures, Theories of Abiogenesis and Panspermia, Research in Astrobiology, etc. Professional training and internships are conducted at the Faculty of Biology, the Institute of Physics Belgrade, the Museum of Natural History, the Vidojevica Observatory and the Botanical Garden.
The Open Day, which will present the Astrobiology module and feature Professor Tanja Berić, the module leader, will take place on Monday, 27 October, from 10:00 to 14:00 at the Laboratory for Experimental Astrobiology, Institute of Physics Belgrade (118 Pregrevica, Zemun).
