Why do some students love physics? During a visit to the Institute of Physics Belgrade on 19 March, bachelor students in physics from Belgrade and Novi Sad discussed why this science is important and the reasons they chose a career in physics.
‘I realized I wanted to engage in physics in high school when I visited Petnica and got interested in the universe and how the world around us functions’ says Jelena Minić, a physics student.
Student David Dugonjić acknowledges that he was first drawn to mathematics. ‘I later realized that physics was a good choice to stay within disciplines maintaining mathematical rigour and giving a nice overview of other natural sciences’, explains Dugonjić.
‘I have always been attracted to science and I have chosen physics because it encompasses them all’, says student Milica Miletić, adding that she likes challenges and wants to prove to herself that she can study such a demanding science as physics.’
Physics student Dragana Nikolić, similar to her colleagues, says that she has liked natural sciences since her primary school. ‘I have picked physics as something that covers the most extensive area,’ she elaborates.
Students visited the Institute of Physics Belgrade during one of the largest scientific conferences dedicated to physics. The Global Physics Summit, organized by the American Physical Society (APS), featured a satellite-run virtual session at the Institute, where students and researchers from Serbia participated on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics.
