Lecture Series on Complex Systems

04. November 2024.

Vreme Weekly featured an article on the lecture series on complex systems organized by the Institute of Physics Belgrade and the Ilija M Kolarac Endowment. Researchers from the Center for the Study of Complex Systems of the Institute of Physics hold lectures on Mondays at 6 p.m. in the Small Hall of the Kolarac Endowment.

‘Complex systems consist of a large number of parts interreacting in various ways, which leads to unexpected behaviour and the emergence of new properties of such systems’, explains Dr Antun Balaž, head of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems and one of the presenters.

As per the article, there are complex systems everywhere around us, so the Kolarac lecture series topics are rather diverse. However, there are some similarities despite researchers investigating different complex systems. ‘Instead of complicated behaviour, order and new physical laws emerge from apparent complexity. In complex systems, the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, not only does science help us describe individual trees, but it also helps us see the forest,’ says Dr Balaž.
