Symposium Marking the Jubilee of Quantum Theory at the Institute of Physics

04. November 2025.

The international symposium CEQPAS – Centennial of Quantum Theory: Progress in Atomic and Molecular Structure opened on Monday, 3 November 2025, in the reading room of the Dr Dragan Popović Library at the Institute of Physics Belgrade.

The symposium was opened by Dr Aleksandar Bogojević, Director of the Institute, and Professor Nigel Mayson from the University of Kent. The event, which runs until Wednesday, 5 November, is organised by researchers from the Laboratory for Atomic Collision Processes. In addition to the Institute of Physics Belgrade, the organisers include the Institute for Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy and the MOLES Consortium.

Lectures on the first day of the symposium addressed topics such as atomic and molecular spectroscopy and its applications, the search for gravitational atoms in the universe, processes in atmospheric-pressure plasmas used in water-treatment applications, and quantum phenomena in cold scattering.

The symposium brings together 40 participants, primarily early-career researchers from Central and Eastern Europe. The event forms part of a broader programme of regional activities marking the International Year of Quantum Theory.

The programme is divided into five thematic sessions covering: atomic and molecular spectroscopy and its applications in atmospheric sciences and astronomy; collisions and their applications in plasma physics; studies in chemical physics and physical chemistry; the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the analysis and generation of atomic and molecular data; and the application of quantum science to a broader understanding of physical phenomena, including radiation sciences.
