How Air is Purified Through Ionization

06. September 2024.

In enclosed space, where people spend time, a range of pollutants can be found – not just viruses, bacteria and fungi but other volatile organic compounds and microplastic particles.

The effects of ionization and ways to use it for air purification have been studied for some time at the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The research is conducted through the IonCleanTech project funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the Green programme promoting cooperation between science and industry. As partners, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinarian Medicine at the University of Belgrade participate in this project.

Two researchers from the Institute, Dr Anđelija Ilić and Dr Predrag Kolarž, discussed how ionization is used for air purification in the video series A Glance at Physics.
